Awareness Group Issues Warnings to Tourists Drinking Alcohol in Bali Amid Methanol Poisoning Risks
Bali, April 25, 2026 – As Bali continues to welcome tourists from around the world, safety advocates have issued fresh warnings about the dangers of consuming illicit alcoholic beverages on the island. Methanol poisoning remains a serious threat to both visitors and locals, prompting renewed awareness campaigns ahead of the approaching peak tourist season.
Methanol Poisoning: A Deadly Risk
Methanol poisoning, often resulting from the consumption of bootleg spirits, is a critical health issue in Bali. This form of alcohol poisoning carries fatality rates between 20 to 40 percent and can leave survivors with severe, lasting injuries such as blindness. The poisonous substance is frequently found in illegally produced liquors known locally as “miras oplosan” or Arak, a spirit distilled from ingredients such as coconut flower, rice, and sugarcane.
Doctors Without Borders highlights Indonesia as having the highest reported incidents of methanol poisoning worldwide over the past two decades. Bali, along with neighboring Lombok and the Gili Islands, has seen many cases among both tourists and the local population. The NGO emphasizes that these incidents often involve unlicensed sales from informal “bottle-shops.”
Ongoing Monitoring and Community Efforts
In addition to international health organizations, local campaigners are actively working to raise public awareness. Colin Ahearn, an Australian founder of the ‘Just Don’t Drink Spirits in Bali’ Facebook group, has been instrumental in educating both tourists and locals about the risks. Ahearn advises travelers to avoid hard liquors and instead choose beer or wine, or only consume spirits obtained duty-free on arrival.
He also recommends that tourists destroy the labels and lids of empty alcohol bottles bought duty-free to discourage their reuse for illicit liquor sales. “Trash the label, wreck the lid and make it hard for people to sell your bottle. It just makes reusing the bottle that little bit harder and less attractive,” Ahearn stated.
Health Warning: Symptoms and Dangers
One of the major dangers of methanol poisoning is the substance’s tastelessness, making it easy for toxic drinks to be disguised in innocent-looking cocktails. The minimal fatal dose for methanol can be as little as 30ml, while as little as 10ml may cause blindness. Symptoms escalate rapidly and can lead to visual disturbances, coma, brain damage, and death if not treated promptly.
Doctors Without Borders provides ongoing updates and a live reporting map tracking suspected methanol poisoning cases across Indonesia and other affected countries in the region, including India and Pakistan.
Stay Safe While Enjoying Bali
As Bali remains one of the world’s safest travel destinations overall, visitor safety hinges on awareness and precautionary measures. Tourists are strongly encouraged to adhere to local safety advice, avoid unlicensed alcohol sales, and seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of alcohol poisoning arise.
For comprehensive information and latest safety updates, tourists can refer to community groups and official health resources. The Bali tourism sector continues to work alongside NGOs to safeguard visitor health and maintain the island’s reputation as a premier travel destination.
