Danish Tourist Dies After Snorkeling Trip Off Bali’s Nusa Penida
A 42-year-old Danish tourist tragically died following a snorkeling excursion near the popular Indonesian island of Nusa Penida. The tourist fell ill shortly after returning to his accommodation on Nusa Lembongan on June 29, 2026. Incident Details
According to local authorities, the man had just come back to Samah Nusa Lembongan Villa after snorkeling in the waters surrounding Nusa Penida when he began experiencing shortness of breath. He reported feeling unwell to his companions at around 11:30 a.m. Villa staff and his travel companions immediately administered first aid before rushing him to East Medical Lembongan Clinic for urgent treatment.
Despite their efforts, the tourist was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the clinic. Investigations by Nusa Penida Police found no signs of physical trauma or violence on the victim. A preliminary external examination suggested that the man may have suffered a sudden heart attack following the snorkeling activity.
Investigation and Family’s Decision
The police conducted interviews with witnesses and examined the incident site as part of their inquiry. However, an autopsy was not performed because the victim’s family declined the procedure, accepting the circumstances of his passing. The deceased’s body was subsequently transferred to Bali Mandara Hospital in Denpasar for further management.
Nusa Penida Police Chief I Ketut Kesuma Jaya confirmed the ongoing investigation but noted that the exact cause of death remains unconfirmed without an autopsy. The authorities have withheld the victim’s full identity, respecting the family’s privacy.
This unfortunate incident highlights the potential health risks associated with water activities, especially for individuals with underlying medical conditions. Visitors to Bali’s renowned tourist destinations are advised to exercise caution and seek medical advice if they experience any signs of distress during such activities.
