Body Parts Found on Bali Beach Identified as Ukrainian Tourist Kidnapped and Tortured, Police Confirm
Denpasar, Bali – Indonesian authorities have confirmed that decomposing and mutilated human remains discovered on a Bali beach belonged to a Ukrainian tourist who was kidnapped and subjected to torture while vacationing on the island. Bali police spokesperson Ariasandy announced the identification on Friday following DNA analysis that matched the remains to Ihor Komarov, 28, by comparing samples taken from the dismembered body with those of his mother.
Komarov, reportedly the son of a wealthy Ukrainian businessman, was abducted on February 15 in the resort town of Jimbaran. Eyewitness accounts state that he was riding a motorbike accompanied by a friend when a group of assailants forced him into a vehicle, leaving his companion behind to alert the police. At the time, Komarov was accompanied by his girlfriend, Yea Mishalova, a social media influencer who had posted a photo with him on Valentine’s Day.
Investigations revealed that the kidnappers had demanded millions of dollars in ransom from Komarov’s family. However, authorities are still determining the exact motive behind the crime.
Following the discovery of body parts along a beach and near a river by local residents days after the kidnapping, police arrested the individual who rented the vehicle used in the abduction. This person implicated six other foreign nationals who are now considered suspects in the case involving kidnapping and aggravated assault. These suspects have reportedly fled Indonesia, prompting police to issue international red notices for their arrest.
Ariasandy noted that multiple suspects possessed several passports, complicating verification efforts, which are ongoing abroad. “Some carried out the kidnapping; there may be others who subsequently committed abuse,” he said.
The investigation continues as Indonesian authorities, in cooperation with international agencies, seek to apprehend those responsible for the violent crime against Komarov on Bali, a popular resort island known for its tourism.
