Tourist Snorkelling Tragedy on Bali’s Nusa Penida Sparks Safety Concerns
Nusa Penida, Indonesia – A fatal snorkelling incident off the coast of Nusa Penida in Bali has heightened concerns over tourist safety and prompted calls for stricter safety protocols among tour operators. The tragedy occurred on February 2, 2026, at the popular Manta Point dive site, a location renowned for encounters with manta rays, drawing tens of thousands of tourists annually.
The victim, a 40-year-old South Korean man identified by his initials SR, was participating in a snorkelling tour alongside another tourist. Both were accompanied by an experienced local guide and boat captain. According to Nusa Penida Police Chief AKP I Ketut Kesuma Jaya, the victim was found in a weakened state around 10 a.m., and immediate assistance was requested from a nearby boat for evacuation.
Despite receiving resuscitation and first aid en route, SR remained unresponsive and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Nusa Medika Clinic in Nusa Penida.
Safety Concerns and Warnings
The incident has intensified scrutiny around the safety measures and health checks enforced by tour operators before water activities. Police Chief Kesuma urged tourists to take personal responsibility regarding their health and physical fitness prior to engaging in high-risk recreational activities like snorkelling.
This tragedy coincides with a period of extreme weather, including warnings of high waves and tidal surges linked to the full moon phenomenon on February 2. The Bali Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued alerts for elevated sea levels affecting coastal areas, including prime tourist spots such as Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Jimbaran, Uluwatu, Nusa Dua, and others.
The BMKG advised the public to remain vigilant, prioritize safety, and monitor their official channels for maritime weather updates, as hazardous conditions are forecasted through at least February 4, with further advisories likely due to ongoing rainy season weather patterns.
Tourists planning coastal activities in Bali are strongly recommended to maintain comprehensive travel insurance coverage and to remain informed of local weather conditions to minimize risks.
