Sanur Port Upgrades to Ease Travel for Tourists Heading to Nusa Penida
Sanur, Bali – In response to rapidly increasing demand from tourists traveling to Nusa Penida and other nearby islands, significant operational changes have been implemented at Sanur Port to improve the flow of passenger traffic and reduce congestion. The Denpasar Transportation Agency has announced the reopening of Mertasari Pier, an additional docking facility, to alleviate the heavy crowds currently overwhelming Sanur Harbour.
Surging Tourist Demand
Sanur is a key departure point for fast boat travel to the Nusa Islands, Gili Islands, and Lombok, favored for its convenient location near Denpasar city, the Bukit Peninsula, and Ngurah Rai International Airport. Following Bali’s recognition as one of TripAdvisor’s Best of Best Destinations in 2026, tourist arrivals continue to increase, even during what is traditionally considered the low season. This rising influx has caused Sanur Harbour to experience substantial bottlenecks, particularly during peak travel hours.
Operational Changes
Although Sanur Harbour underwent major upgrades just a few years ago, these improvements have been insufficient to manage the surging passenger volumes. To address this issue, the Denpasar Transportation Agency has collaborated with local stakeholders including the Harbormaster, Port Authority Office (KSOP), Perumda Bhukti Praja Sewakadarma (BPS), and the Intaran Traditional Village (BUPDA) to coordinate the reopening of Mertasari Pier. Facilities such as passenger waiting rooms and safety amenities are currently being prepared to support the renewed operations.
Traffic and Transportation Management
Ketut Sriawan, Head of the Denpasar City Transportation Agency, emphasized the goal of the relocation: “By operating the Mertasari Pier, passenger traffic isn’t concentrated at Matahari Terbit Sanur, allowing for a smoother flow of traffic.” This approach aims not only to improve passenger boarding conditions but also to ease the vehicle traffic congestion that frequently causes gridlock in the Sanur area, impacting both tourists and local residents.
Alternate Travel Options and Travel Advice
Authorities are also promoting Serangan Harbour as an alternative port to distribute the passenger load more evenly. For travelers seeking other routes to the islands, Padangbai Harbour in East Bali remains an alternative option. Tourists using Sanur Port are advised to plan for quick drop-offs due to limited parking availability and to allocate extra time for travel or choose off-peak travel hours to minimize delays.
Future Outlook
With Sanur developing into a Special Economic Zone for medical tourism and featuring significant infrastructure such as Bali International Hospital and ICON Bali Mall, further upgrades in transportation and public services are anticipated. The reopening of Mertasari Pier is viewed as a crucial step toward enhancing Sanur’s capacity to serve increasing numbers of visitors efficiently and comfortably.
Tourists are encouraged to stay informed about travel options and to consider alternative ports when planning trips to the beautiful neighboring islands of Bali.
