Extreme Weather in Bali Causes Tragedy and Prompts Tourist Warnings

BALI, Indonesia — A series of extreme weather events during the peak of Bali’s rainy season has resulted in tragic incidents and widespread disruptions across the island. The Bali Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has been responding to over forty emergency call-outs involving heavy rain, strong winds, and flash floods affecting multiple regencies.

Severe Rainfall and Flash Flooding Impact Communities

Among the hardest-hit areas is Kuwum Village in Tabanan Regency, where flash floods swept through, causing a devastating incident involving a local family. Three members were swept away; while a 31-year-old man was found alive but seriously injured, a toddler girl was discovered 6.7 kilometers from her home near Batu Belig Beach after being reported by beach visitors. The search continues for the remaining missing family member. Bali Search and Rescue teams, disaster management personnel, and the police have been conducting around-the-clock operations to locate the missing.

Authorities Urge Vigilance as Weather Warnings Continue

The Regent of Tabanan, Komang Gede Sanjaya, has called on residents and tourists alike to exercise heightened caution, particularly in disaster-prone areas including major tourist attractions such as Tanah Lot Temple, Jatiluwih Rice Terraces, and Alas Kedaton Monkey Forest. Authorities ask the public to maintain safety protocols and adhere to guidance issued by disaster response agencies.

An official early warning from the Bali Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) indicates that extreme weather, including moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by lightning and strong winds, is expected to persist until January 27. Areas forecast to be most affected include Denpasar, Badung (notably Kuta and Canggu), Gianyar (including Ubud), and Tabanan.

Damage to Iconic Tourist Landmarks

Strong winds on Wednesday caused structural damage at Kuta Beach when the iconic Kuta Beach sign was severely crumpled. For safety reasons, the sign was dismantled with approval from the Badung Regency Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency. Officials stated that repairs are pending, with hopes for a more durable reconstruction to withstand future extreme weather.
