Eid al-Fitr Sparks Surge of Tourists at Bali’s Premier Destinations

March 19, 2026 – Bali, Indonesia

Following the island’s observance of Nyepi, Bali is gearing up for a significant influx of domestic tourists celebrating Eid al-Fitr, the largest festival in the Islamic calendar. Millions of Indonesian families are traveling throughout the country, with hundreds of thousands expected to visit Bali’s top tourist spots over the coming days.

Increased Travel and Traffic Congestion

Thousands of visitors are arriving not only by air but also overland from East Java, Lombok, and East Nusa Tenggara, many bringing their own vehicles. This surge adds to the usual traffic challenges on the island, prompting both locals and tourists to allow ample travel time on roads to avoid delays.

Airport Preparations and Festivities

At Ngurah Rai International Airport, authorities have mobilized 2,598 officers to manage the heightened transportation demand. The airport’s Integrated Eid al-Fitr Holiday Transportation Monitoring Post will operate for 18 days to coordinate airport operations effectively throughout the holiday period.

To accommodate the spike in travel, more than 15 new domestic flight routes have been launched. During the first three days of service at the Eid Transportation Post, passenger numbers rose 12.9% compared to the same period last year, with 188,655 travelers recorded.

Passengers arriving at the airport are encouraged to arrive earlier than usual. To enhance the festive atmosphere, the airport is hosting special events including Ogoh Ogoh parades, traditional Kecak and Barong dance performances, and Eid celebrations.

Popular and Alternative Destinations

Busy tourist areas such as Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Ubud Water Palace, Tanah Lot Temple, and cultural sites like Penglipuran Village and GWK Cultural Park are experiencing noticeably higher visitor numbers. Major shopping centers including Kuta Beachwalk Mall and ICON Mall Sanur are also bustling, featuring special Eid events.

Travelers aiming to avoid crowds are advised to explore less frequented spots like Amed, Lovina, West Bali National Park, Medewi, and Munduk, which offer tranquil alternatives with cultural and natural attractions.

Busy Water Crossings and Travel Tips

Fast boat and ferry routes between Sanur and the Gili Islands or Lombok are especially busy. Early booking of boat tickets is strongly recommended. Alternative departure points such as Serangan Port, Padangbai, and Kusamba Port provide options that may help avoid the heaviest crowds.

The Eid al-Fitr season in Bali brings a vibrant social atmosphere, with streets and attractions enlivened by celebrations despite the increased bustle, welcoming visitors eager to experience the island’s unique cultural festivities.
