Bali Officials Warn Tourists as Crime Concerns Rise Amid Increased Visitor Numbers
Bali, Indonesia – As Bali continues to attract a growing number of tourists, local authorities have issued warnings to visitors regarding a recent uptick in theft-related crimes across the island. With over one million tourists arriving in March 2026, representing a 10.5% increase from the previous year, officials are intensifying security measures to ensure traveler safety.
Rise in Tourist Theft Cases
Among the crimes reported, bag snatching and phone robberies have become particularly common. Thieves often operate on motorcycles, targeting tourists walking at night in popular areas. A notable incident in late June involved a female tourist who was mugged in Pecatu Village near Uluwatu. CCTV footage captured a man on a motorcycle forcibly snatching her bag after pulling her to the ground before speeding away.
Local police are aware of these incidents and have increased patrols and surveillance in crime-prone zones. The South Kuta Police have deployed specialized teams to investigate theft scenes and collect intelligence to curtail these offenses.
Safety Advice for Visitors
Tourists are advised to take precautions by using taxis at night and keeping valuables secured at their accommodations. Australian travel content creator Samantha, who resides in Bali, has highlighted the severity of phone and jewelry snatchings, recommending travelers keep phones out of sight and jewelry tucked away. She stressed that many of the perpetrators are not locals but individuals who have come to the island to commit crimes.
Travel experts also emphasize the importance of obtaining comprehensive travel insurance that covers theft and keeping copies of policy information separate from personal belongings for ease of reporting losses.

Authorities encourage tourists to remain vigilant, report any incidents promptly to local police, and contact emergency services by dialing 110, where operators speak English.
