AI Technology Set to Transform Bali’s Tourism Industry

Bali, Indonesia – The tourism sector in Bali is poised for a significant transformation with the integration of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Officials and tourism leaders in Bali are embracing AI and virtual reality (VR) innovations to enhance the travel experience, promote lesser-known destinations, and boost local businesses across the region.

Indonesia’s National Tourism Initiative: MaiA

In December 2025, the Indonesian national tourism board, Wonderful Indonesia, introduced an AI-powered platform named Meticulous Artificial Intelligence of Indonesia (MaiA). Supported by Google’s Gemini technology, MaiA is designed to assist both domestic and international tourists in planning more personalized and meaningful trips across Indonesia’s diverse archipelago.

Since its launch, MaiA has become an essential tool for thousands of travelers, providing adaptive, intelligent travel assistance that highlights destinations, cultural sites, and local experiences.

Klungkung Regency Leads Regional Innovation

On a regional level, government officials in Bali’s Klungkung Regency—comprising Southeast Bali and the islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, and Nusa Ceningan—are actively advancing AI and VR technologies to boost tourism promotion. Regency leaders recently met with service providers to discuss the development of AI-based virtual tours, enabling prospective visitors to explore the region virtually before making travel plans.

Regent Made Satria emphasized the need for tourism promotion to keep pace with technological progress. "With AI-based virtual tours, prospective tourists can get a realistic picture before visiting in person," he stated. The initiative aims to showcase Klungkung’s vast potential, from its renowned coastal landscapes to its rich cultural heritage.

Digital Mapping and Economic Benefits

Klungkung Regional Secretary Anak Agung Gede Lesmana highlighted that combining VR and AI tools will provide the government with comprehensive digital mapping of tourism assets. This approach is expected to open new promotional avenues and generate economic growth benefiting local communities and businesses.

Travel Recommendations Enhanced by AI

Testing the capabilities of MaiA in recommending top travel spots, The Bali Sun learned that the AI assistant suggests popular destinations such as Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida, Kertha Gosa Park in Semarapura, the Goa Lawah Temple, and the islands of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan.

For travelers seeking less crowded experiences, local insights recommend visiting lesser-known attractions like Goa Giri Putri Temple and Atuh King viewpoint on Nusa Penida, as well as unique accommodations such as The Angkal Resort and Pramana Natura.
