Bali Tightens Tourist Visa Rules Impacting Influencers, Creators, and Volunteers
Bali immigration authorities have implemented stricter enforcement of visa regulations aimed at foreign visitors engaging in unpaid professional activities. This move specifically targets influencers, digital creators, volunteers, and others participating in collaborations or services without monetary compensation.
Tourist visas in Bali are now clearly designated solely for tourism purposes. Activities such as photography, yoga instruction, wellness coaching, social media promotion, and other services—even when performed without payment—may be considered violations of immigration laws. Authorities have emphasized that the economic value or promotional nature of work, paid or unpaid, is subject to scrutiny.
The tightening of rules responds to a significant increase in foreigners using Bali as a base for professional or semi-professional activities under tourist or socio-cultural visas. Many visitors assumed that unpaid collaborations or services like content creation, brand promotion, or skill-exchange volunteering were permissible. However, Bali immigration clarifies that such activities may require appropriate work or business visas.
Volunteers and skill-exchange travelers are also affected by these new regulations. Participation in retreats, events, workshops, or service exchanges involving accommodation or experience benefits can be subject to visa violations if done under tourist status.
Bali immigration warns that breaches of these rules could lead to investigations, visa cancellations, deportations, fines, and difficulties in obtaining future Indonesian visas. Authorities are increasingly monitoring social media and other platforms to identify possible violations.
Travelers planning to visit Bali are urged to carefully review visa conditions and ensure that their planned activities conform to immigration policies to avoid complications during their stay.
