Bali May Soon Require Tourists to Show Proof of Funds Before Entry

Bali is considering new measures to manage overtourism and ensure responsible travel as it remains one of the top destinations in Southeast Asia. The Bali Provincial Government is finalizing regulations that could require all foreign tourists to present proof of financial means upon arrival. This new policy aims to promote what officials call “high-quality tourism” by discouraging visitors who are not financially prepared for their stay on the island.

According to Governor Wayan Koster, travelers might need to provide up to three months of recent bank statements as evidence of sufficient funds. Additionally, visitors would have to show a confirmed return ticket and detailed plans of their stay in Bali. If travelers fail to comply with these requirements, they could be denied entry or even subject to deportation.

The exact amount of money tourists must demonstrate has not yet been specified, and the policy is still in the proposal stage, pending formal approval through local legislative procedures. Therefore, these requirements are expected to take effect later in the year if adopted.

These steps come after a record-breaking tourist influx in 2025, when Bali welcomed 7.05 million international visitors—a rise of 11.3 percent from the previous year. The island has also recently proposed banning private beaches to restore public access along its coastlines as part of broader efforts to manage visitor impact and protect its natural environment.

For now, tourists planning future trips to Bali should stay informed of these potential changes as the government moves forward with its plans to ensure sustainable and well-regulated tourism on the island.
