New Mega Toll Road Project Announced to Transform Tourist Travel in Bali

Bali, Indonesia – February 6, 2026

Officials in Bali have unveiled plans for a new mega toll road project that aims to revolutionize the way tourists navigate the island. This ambitious infrastructure initiative will connect the emerging Kura Kura Special Economic Zone directly to I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, addressing ongoing traffic congestion while supporting Bali’s growing tourism and economic development.

A Major Boost for Bali’s Infrastructure

The proposed toll road is designed to complement and integrate with the existing Bali Mandara Toll Road, enhancing transportation efficiency around critical traffic bottlenecks in the southern region of Bali, including the Bukit Peninsula and South Denpasar. These areas currently face heavy congestion which hampers travel, especially during peak periods.

Kura Kura Special Economic Zone: A New Economic Hub

The Kura Kura Special Economic Zone spans 498 hectares on Serangan Island and is being developed into a vibrant center for tourism and creative industries. Officially established in April 2023 during President Joko Widodo’s administration, the zone is anticipated to attract investments worth IDR 104.4 trillion (approximately USD 7 billion), generate over 35,000 direct jobs, and create nearly 65,000 indirect employment opportunities. By 2052, it is projected to contribute USD 31.8 billion in foreign exchange, significantly boosting the Indonesian economy.

Supporting Sustainable Development and Environmental Concerns

In preparation for construction, the Kura Kura Bali management team is finalizing environmental impact assessments, vital steps to ensure compliance with national safety and sustainability standards. Persistent collaboration with the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing aims to guarantee that the toll road meets all technical and environmental criteria.

However, the project faces scrutiny from local politicians and community groups. Dr. Somvir, Secretary of the Special Committee for Spatial Planning, Assets, and Licensing, voiced concerns about potential environmental degradation, emphasizing the need to preserve green spaces vital for Bali’s ecological wellbeing and cultural heritage. He stressed the importance of aligning development with Hindu values and the protection of sacred sites. According to Dr. Somvir, Bali’s future prosperity depends on balancing progress with environmental stewardship.

Looking Ahead: Preparing for Change in Bali Travel

As construction plans advance, tourists and residents alike can expect ongoing traffic challenges during the development phase. Authorities and stakeholders encourage travelers to plan accordingly, allowing extra time for journeys and preparing for temporary delays.
