Bali Considers New Entry Requirements to Manage Overtourism
Bali, Indonesia – The Bali Provincial Government is considering implementing new regulations that would require foreign tourists to provide proof of funds upon arrival as part of efforts to address overtourism and promote sustainable travel practices on the island.
According to Governor Wayan Koster, travellers may soon need to present financial documentation such as bank statements covering up to three months to demonstrate “financial adequacy.” In addition to these proof of funds, visitors would be required to show confirmed return tickets and details of their accommodation plans. The proposed measures aim to ensure that tourists are well-prepared financially for their stay and to discourage irresponsible visitor behaviour.
This initiative is part of Bali’s broader strategy to encourage “high-quality tourism” by managing the volume and impact of visitors rather than solely focusing on the numbers. The government has also recently signaled intentions to ban private beaches to increase public access to Bali’s coastlines.
The proposed rules would apply to tourists of all nationalities, and failure to comply might lead to denied entry or deportation, although the exact financial thresholds have not yet been specified. The policy is still under review and has not been officially enacted, with final approval expected later this year.
Bali welcomed a record-breaking 7.05 million international visitors in 2025, marking an 11.3 percent increase from the previous year, underscoring its continued popularity as one of Southeast Asia’s top travel destinations.
Tourists planning future trips to Bali should monitor official updates regarding these potential new entry requirements as the island works to balance its appeal with sustainable tourism management.
