Indonesia’s Bali Cracks Down on Digital Nomads and Influencers Working on Tourist Visas
Bali, Indonesia – The Indonesian authorities have stepped up enforcement measures targeting digital nomads, lifestyle influencers, and travel content creators residing on the island of Bali who are operating under tourist visas. The crackdown specifically addresses individuals who engage in promotional activities or barter deals in exchange for goods and services without receiving direct monetary compensation.
For years, Bali, renowned for its picturesque beaches, vibrant rituals, and luxury resorts, has served as a magnet for influencers and digital economy participants. Many foreign content creators collaborate with local businesses by exchanging social media promotion for complimentary products, stays at upscale resorts, or spa treatments. Until now, such arrangements operated in a grey area regarding visa regulations.
However, the Directorate General of Immigration in Indonesia clarified in a social media statement dated May 7 that unpaid exchanges with economic value are considered illegal work if carried out on a standard tourist visa. The department emphasized that the nature of the activity and its underlying economic benefit are key factors in assessing visa compliance. Specifically, professional services like makeup artistry, photography, product endorsements, and business promotions fall under prohibited work without appropriate visas.
The new regulation has generated confusion among influencers and local enterprises alike, who are uncertain about where to draw the legal line in their collaborations. Indonesian officials stress that the focus is not solely on monetary payment but encompasses any activities yielding economic advantage, including barter-based promotions.
This move is part of a broader effort by Indonesia to enforce immigration laws more strictly and regulate foreign participation in the local economy, ensuring compliance with visa requirements and labor regulations.
