Bali Tourism Safety Enhanced with Launch of Island’s First Rescue Helicopter
In a significant boost to tourist safety, Bali now has its first dedicated search-and-rescue helicopter equipped with hoist capability, providing faster and more effective emergency responses across the island’s coastal and marine areas. The new rescue aircraft promises enhanced security for visitors and locals alike, particularly in beach and offshore zones where emergencies can escalate rapidly.
This state-of-the-art helicopter is funded and supported by the popular FINNS Beach Club and will be operated by Sayap Garuda Indah (SGI), a Bali-based search-and-rescue organization. The operation is in collaboration with Indonesia’s national search and rescue agency, BASARNAS, along with medical assistance from Nusa Medica.
A Key Safety Advancement for Tourists and Residents
The helicopter’s hoist capability allows it to perform challenging rescues from cliffs, rough surf, and vessels offshore, a critical feature in Bali’s varied coastal terrain. FINNS Global Bali CEO and Hospitality Leader Beau Whittington emphasized the company’s commitment to safety, noting the importance of protecting the island’s many visitors, especially Australians who form one of the largest visitor groups on Bali.
“To help ensure the island has strong, reliable rescue capability, we are proud to support this helicopter and work alongside SGI and BASARNAS to safeguard both the local community and numerous Australians who consider Bali their second home,” Whittington said.
Launch Event and Partnership Strengthening Rescue Capacity
The helicopter launch took place at FINNS Beach Club, featuring a formal Memorandum of Understanding confirming BASARNAS’s support. Attendees witnessed a live ocean rescue simulation showcasing the helicopter’s operational capabilities. An SGI spokesperson highlighted that the partnership enhances their ability to respond swiftly and effectively during emergencies, bolstered by the formal backing from FINNS and BASARNAS.
Sustaining Rescue Operations Through Community Support
To maintain funding for the helicopter’s mission, FINNS has introduced fundraising initiatives, including a dedicated menu at their resort where proceeds directly contribute to search-and-rescue operations.
Bali Remains a Popular Yet Challenging Destination
Despite a slight decline in visitor arrivals, Bali continues to be Indonesia’s premier destination for Australian travelers, with over 1 million Australians visiting in 2025. The island’s tourist appeal remains strong, though safety concerns persist, as evidenced by a 25 percent increase in travel insurance sales for Indonesia in 2024 compared to the previous year.
This new rescue helicopter represents an important investment in reinforcing Bali’s safety infrastructure, supporting the island’s long-term tourism resilience and providing travel advisors with greater confidence when recommending Bali as a travel destination.
With enhanced emergency response capabilities now in place, visitors to Bali can enjoy greater peace of mind knowing that rapid, professional rescue services are available across this world-renowned holiday hotspot.
