Bali and UK Collaborate to Address Waste Management and Traffic Amid Record Tourism Surge

Denpasar, Bali – The Bali provincial government has initiated a partnership with the United Kingdom to tackle pressing issues of waste management and traffic congestion as the island experiences an unprecedented rise in tourism. The collaboration aims to enhance Bali’s infrastructure and environmental sustainability in light of the 7 million foreign tourists who visited the island in 2025—a new record.

During a meeting in Denpasar on January 31, 2026, Bali Governor Wayan Koster hosted UK Deputy Ambassador to Indonesia Matthew Downing to discuss potential cooperative efforts. Governor Koster outlined ambitious targets including resolving waste problems within two years and achieving substantial improvements in traffic congestion and infrastructure by 2030. Waste Management Initiatives

The governor emphasized a comprehensive approach to waste management, spanning upstream to downstream processes. Plans include establishing a waste-to-energy facility designed to process over 1,000 tons of waste daily, aiming to significantly reduce landfill use and promote renewable energy sources.

Addressing Safety and Tourism

Governor Koster also commented on the relationship between the tourism boom and security, acknowledging measures to enforce regulations following a rise in criminal acts involving foreigners. He confirmed that British tourists were not involved in any significant violations during 2025. UK Support and Future Plans

Deputy Ambassador Downing reaffirmed the UK’s commitment to supporting Bali’s priorities by facilitating cooperation through existing programs. Notably, the UK’s Future Cities Infrastructure Programme is collaborating with the Bali Provincial Transportation Office to finalize feasibility studies for transportation projects aimed at easing congestion.

Moreover, the UK will connect Bali with expert consultants in waste recycling and public education. The Scottish government is also showing interest in economic cooperation, planning a trade mission to Bali focused on food, health, and alcoholic beverage sectors, with direct meetings scheduled between the Scottish delegation and Governor Koster.

Tourism Outlook

The British Embassy recorded 270,000 arrivals of British tourists in Bali during 2025, with projections expecting this number to increase to 350,000 in 2026. Bali’s secure environment, stable conditions, and quality tourism offerings continue to make it a favored destination for UK travelers.
