Bali to Introduce Proof of Funds Requirement for Tourists Amid Overtourism Concerns

Bali, Indonesia — In a move aimed at managing overtourism and promoting responsible travel, the Bali Provincial Government is preparing new regulations that may soon require foreign visitors to present proof of financial adequacy upon entry. The proposed rule, currently under legislative review, would mandate tourists to provide recent bank statements covering up to three months, along with confirmed return tickets and detailed travel plans.

Governor Wayan Koster outlined the plan as part of Bali’s shift toward fostering “high-quality tourism.” This approach seeks to ensure that tourists are financially prepared for their stay on the island, thereby discouraging irresponsible behavior and reducing the strain on Bali’s popular destinations. While the exact financial thresholds have not yet been specified, failure to comply with the requirements could result in denied entry or deportation.

The announcement follows a record-breaking tourism year in 2025, during which Bali welcomed 7.05 million international visitors—an 11.3 percent increase from the previous year—underscoring the island’s continued popularity among travelers. This surge has prompted officials to explore various measures to alleviate pressure on Bali’s infrastructure and natural resources. One such measure under consideration includes banning private beaches to restore public access to Bali’s coastlines.

Tourists planning their future trips to Bali should note that these regulations are still in the draft stage and have yet to be formally approved. Implementation, if enacted, is expected later in the year. Visitors are advised to stay informed about entry requirements as Bali works to balance its appeal as a top travel destination with sustainable tourism management.
