Nearly 40 Indian Nationals Arrested in Bali for Running Illegal Online Gambling Operation, Raising Concerns Over Indonesia’s Tourist Visa Controls

Bali, Indonesia – The recent arrest of 39 Indian nationals in Bali for allegedly operating an illegal online gambling website has spotlighted vulnerabilities in Indonesia’s tourist visa system and renewed concerns over the persistence of illicit online gambling activities in the country.

Law enforcement officials from Bali police apprehended the suspects in early February following a targeted investigation. Authorities revealed that the group had entered Indonesia on tourist visas and had been running an online gambling operation continuously since November 2025. The operation was based in two villas located in Badung and Tabanan, districts known for their resort attractions in southern and western Bali.

The police initiated surveillance after discovering an Instagram account promoting the gambling website on January 15. Subsequent raids were conducted on February 3, leading to the detainment of all 39 individuals and the seizure of incriminating evidence. Of those arrested, 35 have been formally charged, while four remain under investigation as witnesses.

Gambling, both in physical locations and online platforms, remains illegal under Indonesian law. Despite ongoing government crackdowns, such activities are reported to generate billions of Indonesian rupiah monthly, highlighting the challenge faced by authorities in curbing the illegal industry.

The incident has sparked debate among analysts about the susceptibility of Indonesia’s tourist visa policy to exploitation by foreign criminal groups masquerading as tourists. The case demonstrates the difficulties faced by Indonesia in balancing tourism with national security and law enforcement efforts against cybercrimes.

Authorities have indicated continued vigilance and enforcement actions aimed at dismantling similar networks to uphold Indonesian laws and safeguard the country’s reputation as a premier tourist destination.
