Bali Considers Requiring Tourists to Show Proof of Funds Before Entry
As Bali attracts record numbers of visitors, the island is moving towards stricter entry requirements aimed at managing overtourism and promoting “high-quality tourism.” The Bali Provincial Government is finalising new regulations that could require foreign tourists to present proof of financial means upon arrival.
According to Governor Wayan Koster, travellers may have to show recent bank statements covering up to three months, a confirmed return ticket, and details of their accommodation plans. This measure intends to ensure that visitors are financially prepared for their stay and to discourage irresponsible tourism behavior.
The proposed rule would apply to all nationalities, and failure to comply could result in denied entry or deportation. However, the specific financial threshold visitors must meet has not yet been detailed. The policy is currently still under legislative review, with implementation expected later in 2026 if approved.
These potential changes follow a record-breaking 2025 when Bali welcomed 7.05 million international tourists, an 11.3% increase over the previous year. The move aligns with other efforts by local authorities, including considering bans on private beach access, all aimed at preserving Bali’s natural beauty and maintaining sustainable tourism.
