Three Tourists Arrested in Bali Over Accusations of Filming Pornographic Content
Bali, Indonesia – Local authorities in Bali have detained three tourists on suspicion of producing and distributing pornographic material on the popular holiday island. The arrests took place earlier this month amid Indonesia’s strict laws prohibiting pornography.
Details of the Arrests
On March 13, a 23-year-old French woman, identified in local media as Melisa Mireille Jeanine, and a 24-year-old Italian man, named as Nadir ben Said, were apprehended at Denpasar airport while attempting to leave for Thailand. Subsequently, a 26-year-old French national known only by the initials ERB was arrested in Canggu, Bali. Reports indicate he acted as the woman’s manager.
Police Statement and Evidence Seized
Joseph Edward Purba, police chief of Bali’s Badung district, stated that the arrests followed suspicions the trio sought to profit from producing and distributing explicit electronic content. Authorities confiscated items including smartphones, a camera, a laptop, and a motorcycle taxi vest during the investigation.
Legal Context and Potential Penalties
Pornography is illegal under Indonesian law, with violations potentially leading to up to ten years in prison for production offenses and an additional six years for online distribution. Indonesia recently updated its Criminal Code to further criminalize acts including premarital sex and cohabitation, reflecting the country’s conservative values as a Muslim-majority nation despite Bali’s Hindu majority.
Legal experts have clarified that certain intimate behaviors among tourists are only prosecutable following complaints from close family members, reducing concerns for most visitors who respect local laws and norms.
Background: Previous Adult Content Cases in Bali
This incident follows related controversies, notably the arrest and deportation of British adult content creator Bonnie Blue in December 2025 for visa violations linked to filming activities. Her case drew significant media attention amid concerns about misuse of tourist visas for adult content production in Indonesia.
Tourists visiting Bali are reminded to adhere strictly to local regulations and cultural standards to avoid legal issues in a jurisdiction with stringent views on explicit material.
