Bali Considers New Entry Rule Requiring Tourists to Show Proof of Funds

Bali, Indonesia — In an effort to manage overtourism and promote “high-quality tourism,” Bali’s provincial government is moving forward with a proposal that would require foreign visitors to present proof of financial means upon arrival. The new regulation, currently under review, would oblige tourists to provide recent bank statements covering up to three months, a confirmed return ticket, and details of their travel plans and accommodation.

The proposed measure aims to ensure that tourists are financially prepared for their stay on the island and to discourage irresponsible behavior. Failure to comply with these requirements could lead to denial of entry or deportation, with the rule applying to travelers of all nationalities. However, the exact amount of funds visitors will need to demonstrate has not yet been specified.

This policy initiative comes on the heels of a record-breaking influx of international tourists, with Bali welcoming approximately 7.05 million visitors in 2025—a notable 11.3 percent increase from the previous year. The island, a perennial favorite for travelers worldwide, has been seeking ways to balance its popularity with environmental and cultural preservation.

Additionally, Bali has recently announced plans to ban private beaches as part of a broader strategy to address overtourism and restore public access to its coastline.

The government’s proposal to require proof of funds is still undergoing local legislative processes, and the new entry rules are expected to be implemented later in the year once formally approved. Tourists planning to visit Bali are advised to stay informed about these potential changes as the island refines its approach to sustainable tourism management.
