Three Tourists Arrested in Bali Over Pornography Filming Allegations
Bali, Indonesia – Three tourists have been arrested by local authorities in Bali on accusations of filming pornographic content on the island, a popular holiday destination. The incident has highlighted Indonesia’s strict laws against pornography and online content distribution.
Details of the Arrests
On March 13, a 23-year-old French woman named Melisa Mireille Jeanine and a 24-year-old Italian man identified as Nadir ben Said were detained at Denpasar airport while attempting to leave Indonesia for Thailand. Subsequently, a 26-year-old French national known as ERB, described as the woman’s manager, was arrested on March 15 in Canggu, Bali.
According to Joseph Edward Purba, Chief of Police in Bali’s Badung district, the three are suspected of producing and distributing pornographic video content for profit. Authorities confiscated several electronic devices, including three phones, a camera, a MacBook laptop, and a motorcycle taxi vest believed to be connected to the case.
Legal Context and Potential Consequences
Indonesia enforces strict anti-pornography laws, and those found guilty of producing or distributing such content face severe penalties. The suspects could face up to 10 years in prison for the pornography charges and an additional six years for online distribution violations under Indonesian electronic information and transaction laws.
Bali, predominantly Hindu, is part of Indonesia, a Muslim-majority country with conservative social norms and recently updated criminal laws. The criminal code, effective since January 2, 2026, also criminalizes acts such as premarital sex, cohabitation, and public drunkenness, with penalties ranging from six months to one year in jail.
Authorities clarify that foreign tourists need not fear prosecution for private conduct unless complaints are filed by legal family members. Retno Murni, a legal expert with the People’s Law Centre, emphasized that tourists who respect local customs and adhere to official regulations have no cause for concern.
Recent Similar Incidents
This arrest follows previous scrutiny of adult content creators in Bali. In December 2025, British adult content creator Bonnie Blue (real name Tia Billinger) was arrested and deported for visa violations related to content production. She, along with other individuals, was initially detained after a raid but later released without pornographic charges. However, Bonnie Blue was blacklisted from entering Indonesia for at least ten years.
Bali remains Indonesia’s top overseas destination for Australian tourists, despite the country’s strict moral and legal codes. Authorities urge visitors to comply with local laws and norms while enjoying the island’s attractions.
The investigation into the current case remains ongoing, and the suspects face legal proceedings under Indonesia’s robust anti-pornography legislation.
