Bali’s Tourism Booms as Travel Access Becomes More Affordable for Visitors
Bali continues to solidify its status as a premier global tourist destination, experiencing a notable surge in both international and domestic visitor numbers amid a complex global economic landscape. Recent data and expert insights indicate that tourists from within Indonesia and around the world are increasingly choosing Bali as their travel destination, driven by greater accessibility and growing demand.
Rising Visitor Numbers Fuel Optimism
According to Indonesia’s Central Statistics Agency, international tourist arrivals reached 6.07 million between January and May 2026, marking a 7.6% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Bali, being the primary attraction for most visitors to Indonesia, is on track for a record-breaking year in tourism. Concurrently, domestic travel within Indonesia has also grown, with 532.22 million trips recorded in the first five months of 2026, up by approximately 2%.
This upswing in travel correlates with improved access and more affordable travel options for Indonesian nationals, enabling a larger population to explore Bali and other parts of the archipelago.
Economic Impact and Sector Growth
Parjiman, Head of Bali Province’s Financial Services Authority, reported a significant increase in credit support for the tourism sector. Between April 2025 and April 2026, credit allocated to accommodation, food, and beverage sectors rose by IDR 2.10 trillion, a 15.46% year-on-year growth—the highest increase compared to other local industries. This trend underscores expanding tourism activities and business growth on the island.
Balancing Growth with Quality and Sustainability
While the tourism sector’s growth is promising, experts advise cautious optimism. Trisno Nugroho, Bali branch manager of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association and a tourism economics observer, emphasized the importance of assessing tourism not just by visitor numbers and spending but by the actual economic benefits retained by the Balinese community. He advocates for incorporating green investments, leveraging technology and digital platforms, and maintaining strict governance and regulation enforcement to ensure sustainable and inclusive tourism development.
