Tourists’ Spending Power in Bali Rises as Rupiah Weakens and Low Season Starts
Bali, Indonesia – January 21, 2026
The weakening Indonesian Rupiah against the US Dollar, combined with the onset of Bali’s low tourist season, has enhanced the spending power of tourists visiting the island, offering an unexpectedly favorable environment for both international and domestic travelers.
Economic Impact and Tourism Benefits
The depreciation of the Rupiah makes travel abroad more costly for Indonesian nationals, but it simultaneously increases the appeal of Bali for international visitors by making prices more competitive. According to Dr. IB Raka Suardana, Professor at the Faculty of Economics and Business at Undiknas Denpasar, "For hotels and accommodations targeting the international market, the weakening Rupiah actually increases Bali’s appeal because it makes it a more competitive destination in terms of price."
This currency shift arrives during Bali’s low season when accommodation and day trip prices are traditionally reduced, resulting in amplified value for money. Luxury hotels are also offering attractive promotions, including last-minute booking deals and discounts for extended stays of three to five nights or longer, encouraging visitors to explore multiple areas across the island, such as Canggu, Seminyak, Ubud, Uluwatu, and Nusa Penida.
Domestic Tourism Growth
Aside from benefiting foreign visitors, the Rupiah’s depreciation has made domestic travel comparatively more affordable, encouraging more Indonesians to choose Bali over international vacations. This shift addresses previous concerns regarding higher domestic flight costs to the island compared to similar Southeast Asian destinations. Dr. Suardana noted that domestic tourists’ average spending remains lower than that of international guests, but their increased presence provides a stable source of demand and supports local tourism businesses.
Looking Ahead
Tourism leaders emphasize the importance of balancing efforts to attract both international and domestic tourists to maintain Bali’s tourism sector growth. The current market conditions offer a prime opportunity for travelers seeking affordable luxury and for the island to bolster its tourism economy through increased visitor numbers during the off-peak season.
With reduced crowds, lowered prices, and favorable exchange rates, now is an advantageous time for travelers to plan a multi-stop itinerary to experience all that Bali’s diverse cultural and natural attractions have to offer.
